Temperament & Personality

Beagles are amiable, alert, and even-tempered companions. They should never show aggression or timidity. These are energetic, enthusiastic dogs full of vigor and always ready for activity. Physical Characteristics

Size
The Beagle is a medium-small breed with well-defined size parameters that contribute to their agility and endurance as working hounds.

  • Height: 33-40 cm (approximately 13-16 inches) at the shoulder
  • Build: Sturdy and compact, conveying quality without coarseness

Head & Expression
The Beagle's head is one of their most distinctive features, combining power with refinement and creating their characteristic appealing expression that has made them so beloved.

  • Dark brown or hazel eyes that are fairly large with a mild, appealing expression

Body

Legs & Feet

Tail

  • Should NOT curl over the back
  • Well-covered with hair, especially underneath
  • White tip on the tail

Colours

  • Red and white

Note: Most colors can also appear as mottled. The tip of the tail should be white.

 

 

 

Movement
Beagles move with a level, firm back showing free, long-reaching strides in front with good drive from behind. The movement should be straight and true without high action.

Purpose

Originally bred as scent hounds for hunting in packs, Beagles are still used for this purpose by various institutions, including colleges and schools. Their excellent scenting ability and determination make them outstanding at tracking.
